Dimensions

What does Draft mean?

Draft is the vertical distance from the waterline to the deepest part of the boat below the surface, usually the keel or rudder.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

It affects which marinas, channels and anchorages you can enter. Loading, water density and keel configuration can change the actual figure. A brochure number is a starting point, not a clearance guarantee.

A practical example

A boat drawing six feet needs more than six feet of water to preserve clearance under the keel. Tide, waves, chart accuracy and bottom type also matter.

A question to ask before buying

Which keel version is fitted, and is the quoted draft for the boat in its normal loaded condition?
