What does Centerboard mean?

A centerboard is a retractable underwater foil used to reduce sideways movement under sail. It generally pivots into a case; a daggerboard slides instead.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

Retractable foils can give access to shallower water when raised, but minimum draft is only one consideration. The case, lifting mechanism and underwater components need maintenance. Designs vary in how ballast and stability are provided.

A practical example

A keel-centerboard cruiser can have separate quoted drafts for board-up and board-down operation.

A question to ask before buying

What are both draft figures, how is the board lifted, and when were the mechanism and case last inspected?
