Hull & keel

What does Keel mean?

A keel is the lower central structure or appendage beneath a sailboat. Depending on the design, it contributes lateral resistance and may carry ballast.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

Keel shape affects draft, handling, wetted area and how the boat responds to grounding. Condition matters as much as type. Inspect attachment details, surrounding structure and evidence of previous impacts. A particular keel label does not guarantee offshore suitability.

A practical example

A fin-keel cruiser and a full-keel cruiser may share a similar length but have different turning and shallow-water characteristics.

A question to ask before buying

Which keel configuration is fitted, and is there a documented history of grounding or structural repair?
