Dimensions

What does Displacement mean?

Displacement is the weight of water a floating boat displaces; for a boat afloat in equilibrium, that equals the boat’s total weight.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

Published figures may describe an empty, light or design condition. Fuel, water, tools, stores and extra equipment add weight. Compare definitions before comparing boats, and pay attention to the manufacturer’s loading limits.

A practical example

A cruising boat carrying full tanks and a dinghy can weigh considerably more than its lightship specification.

A question to ask before buying

Does this figure include tanks, equipment and cruising stores, and how much additional load can the boat carry?
