What does Air draft mean?
Air draft is the vertical distance from the waterline to the highest point of the boat, often the masthead or an antenna.
Why it matters when choosing a sailboat
It matters when considering bridges, overhead cables and some waterways. Masthead instruments, antennas, tides and loading can alter your real clearance. Never treat a nominal mast height as a guaranteed safe passage beneath an obstruction.
A practical example
A mast specification that excludes an antenna can understate the clearance the boat actually needs.
A question to ask before buying
What is the measured height to the highest fitted item, and how will I verify clearance on my route?
