Dimensions
What does Length overall (LOA) mean?
Length overall describes a boat’s overall length, but published measurements do not always include the same fittings.
Why it matters when choosing a sailboat
Bowsprits, platforms, davits and other overhangs can affect the space you need. Marinas and storage yards may measure the actual occupied length rather than use the model name. A model called “40” need not measure exactly forty feet.
A practical example
A boat advertised as a forty-footer may occupy a longer berth once a bowsprit or stern platform is included.
A question to ask before buying
Which appendages are included in this LOA, and what length will my marina charge for?
