Rig & sails

What does Standing rigging mean?

Standing rigging supports the mast. On a conventionally stayed rig, it includes components such as shrouds, forestays and backstays.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

Wire, rod, terminals, chainplates and attachment points all need appropriate inspection. Appearance alone may not reveal fatigue or hidden corrosion. Service history, design, use and inspection findings matter when planning replacement or insurance requirements.

A practical example

A rigging invoice may record replaced wires while leaving some chainplates or mast fittings unchanged.

A question to ask before buying

Which components were replaced, when, by whom, and what did the latest professional rig inspection cover?
