Hull & keel
What does Full keel mean?
A full keel extends along a substantial portion of a boat’s underwater length, with exact shape varying by design.
Why it matters when choosing a sailboat
It can offer directional steadiness and may provide some protection for underwater components. That does not eliminate grounding damage or maintenance needs. Maneuvering in tight spaces and reversing behavior can differ from boats with smaller fin keels.
A practical example
A buyer moving from a modern fin-keel boat to a traditional full-keel boat should allow time to learn its low-speed handling.
A question to ask before buying
How does this boat turn and reverse, and how accessible are the rudder, propeller and shaft for service?
