What does Gybing (jibing) mean?

Gybing is changing direction so the stern passes through the wind and the mainsail changes sides. “Jibing” is another common spelling.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

The boom and sail can move rapidly during this maneuver or an accidental gybe. Controls, crew communication and the specific rig determine the procedure. Learn the boat’s handling arrangements with appropriate instruction; this definition is not a maneuver checklist.

A practical example

When a downwind course changes from wind on one quarter to wind on the other, a gybe may be involved.

A question to ask before buying

How is the boom controlled, and what training and equipment does this boat need for my crew’s planned sailing?
