Rig & sails

What does Mainsail mean?

The mainsail is the principal sail associated with the mainmast. On many common cruising rigs, it is set behind the mast and attached along a boom.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

Sail condition, size, battens and reefing arrangements influence performance and handling. Conventional, in-mast and in-boom systems have different procedures and service requirements. The installed sail-handling system should be demonstrated rather than assessed only from the equipment list.

A practical example

A worn mainsail may be usable yet hold a poor shape, making control and sailing efficiency less satisfactory.

A question to ask before buying

How old is the sail, what repairs has it had, and can I see it hoisted, reefed and stowed?
