What does Sheet mean?

A sheet is a line used to control a sail’s position or trim. It is not the sail itself.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

The mainsheet controls the mainsail through the boom and its purchase system; headsail sheets control the clew of a jib or genoa. Loads, routing and reachable winches influence how much effort and coordination a boat requires.

A practical example

When the helmsman asks a crew member to ease the jib sheet, the request concerns a control line, not a halyard.

A question to ask before buying

Can sheets be handled from secure positions, and are the winches and blocks suitable and maintained?
