Inspection checklist for this model
Use this checklist when evaluating a specific Catalina 36. It is general buyer guidance, not a claim that this model has a particular defect.
- Hull, deck and structure: inspect moisture intrusion, deck fittings, chainplates, bulkheads and previous repairs with a qualified marine surveyor.
- Keel and rudder: confirm the actual keel configuration, groundings history, steering play and bearing condition.
- Rig and sails: request standing-rigging replacement records, inspect terminals and spars, and assess sail condition.
- Engine and systems: verify engine hours against service logs, arrange a mechanical inspection, and test charging, plumbing and navigation systems.
- Sea trial: assess steering, handling, sail trim, vibration and operating temperatures under representative conditions.
- Ownership costs: budget for haulout, insurance, storage, deferred maintenance and any major refit.
Buyers should obtain an independent survey and consult qualified professionals. Published model specifications are not a substitute for a boat-specific inspection.

Catalina 36: important design variations
Factory documentation distinguishes fin-keel and wing-keel versions. The standard fin keel draws approximately 5 ft 10 in, whereas the wing keel draws approximately 4 ft 5 in. Displacement and ballast also differ. Standard and tall rigs have different rated sail areas, so confirm which configuration is aboard.
Tank capacities also vary by cabin layout. The Catalina 36 owners' manual reports 25 or 32 US gallons of fuel and 80 or 84 US gallons of freshwater, depending on configuration. Confirm actual tanks and any refit changes.

Additional model considerations
Fin-keel and shoal-wing variants have different draft and displacement. The values below describe the standard fin-keel boat; check each vessel’s keel, rig, and model-year configuration.
