What does Reefing mean?

Reefing means reducing a sail’s working area while retaining a usable sail shape for the conditions.

Why it matters when choosing a sailboat

The details depend on the sail and system. Reefing points, lines, hooks, furlers and crew positions should be understood before they are needed. Buying a boat with electric winches or furling does not remove the need for a reliable reduced-sail procedure.

A practical example

A slab-reefed mainsail is shortened to a reefing position and secured using the boat’s designated arrangement.

A question to ask before buying

Can the seller demonstrate each reef and explain the normal procedure, limitations and backup plan?
