How to Estimate Anchor Scope Correctly

Understand how depth, bow height, tide and rode length affect anchoring geometry.

Before you start

Gather the appropriate supplies and review the specific equipment manual.

  • Tide information
  • Chain or rode markings

Scope = rode length ÷ H. H includes depth at the anchor, bow height above the water and expected tide increase. Conceptual drawing, not to scale; check holding and swing room.

Step-by-step instructions

0 of 5 steps completed on this device
  1. Find the depth at the anchor

Estimate actual water depth where the anchor lies, not just the depth under the boat.

  2. Add the bow roller height

Scope uses the vertical distance from the seabed to the rode attachment point.

  3. Allow for tidal changes

Use the highest likely water level during your planned stay, plus appropriate margin.

  4. Choose scope for conditions

Holding bottom, wind, current, rode type and swing room determine a safe setting; there is no universal number.

  5. Confirm holding and room

Set the anchor and monitor position, nearby boats and whether you can safely swing through a change of tide.

Safety note

Never rely on a fixed ratio without checking the anchorage and manufacturer guidance. A short scope or inadequate swing room can be dangerous.

Key takeaway

Good scope calculations start with water depth plus the bow height and tide.
