How to Calculate Anchor Scope

Choose chain or rode length based on total water depth, tide and conditions.

Before you start

Gather the appropriate supplies and review the specific equipment manual.

  • Depth sounder
  • Tide information
  • Rode length marks

Step-by-step instructions

0 of 5 steps completed on this device
  1. Work out real depth

Combine chart or sounder depth with tidal change and height from waterline to bow roller.

  2. Choose a conservative scope

Consider anchor and rode manufacturer guidance, holding ground, wind, swell and swing room.

  3. Calculate required rode

Multiply total vertical distance by your chosen scope ratio; common all-chain starting points vary with conditions.

  4. Allow for swing circle

Check nearby boats, shallow areas and hazards at all likely wind and current directions.

  5. Set and verify

Back down gradually after laying out the rode and confirm position over time using visual bearings and an anchor alarm.

Safety note

No fixed scope guarantees holding. Poor seabed, reversing current, waves or extreme wind may require a different anchorage or technique.

Key takeaway

Calculate from the bow to the seabed at high tide, not just the depth on the sounder.
