How to Use AIS Information Safely

Interpret nearby vessel targets while understanding what AIS cannot show.

Before you start

Gather the appropriate supplies and review the specific equipment manual.

  • AIS-capable display
  • Current charts
  • Visual lookout

Step-by-step instructions

0 of 5 steps completed on this device
  1. Confirm your receiver status

Check the display, antenna connection indications and your own transmit state if your equipment transmits.

  2. Read the relevant target fields

Identify position, course over ground, speed over ground and estimated closest point of approach.

  3. Watch trends over time

CPA and TCPA can change as boats maneuver; use multiple updates rather than one calculation.

  4. Cross-check with sight and radar

Look for small craft, unreported targets and targets whose data is missing or delayed.

  5. Follow collision regulations

Use visual bearings and COLREGs responsibilities, maintaining safe speed and a proper lookout.

Safety note

AIS does not detect every vessel and may contain incorrect or delayed data. It never replaces a lookout or radar where carried.

Key takeaway

Treat AIS as one information source in a complete collision-avoidance picture.
